Microsoft is ending mainstream support for Windows Server 2022 on October 13, 2026. While that doesn’t mean the operating system will stop getting security updates immediately, it’s a reminder for businesses to check both their server software and the physical hardware it’s running on.
According to BleepingComputer, Windows Server 2022 will go into extended support after the October deadline. During extended support, Microsoft will continue to provide monthly security updates for free, but non-security updates, new features, design changes and standard support will be more limited.
Security updates will continue until October 14, 2031 according to the official Microsoft Windows Server 2022 lifecycle.
But don’t interpret that extended support window as an excuse to ignore aging technology.
What Does the End of Mainstream Support Mean?
Mainstream support is the phase where a Microsoft product gets:
- Security updates
- Non-security updates
- Bug fixes
- Quality and reliability improvements
- New features or design changes
- Standard technical support
Once Windows Server 2022 goes into extended support it will continue to get security updates but Microsoft will not introduce new features or accept change requests. Paid support may also be required for non-security issues.
For businesses still running Windows Server 2022 the October deadline should be a planning milestone not a reason to replace every server immediately.

Should You Upgrade to Windows Server 2025?
Microsoft recommends organizations start evaluating Windows Server 2025, its latest Long-Term Servicing Channel release. Windows Server 2025 will get mainstream support through November 2029 and extended support through November 2034.
That doesn’t mean every business needs to migrate now. The right decision will depend on:
- Age and condition of the existing server
- Manufacturer support and warranty status
- Compatibility with Windows Server 2025
- Application and database requirements
- Storage and performance needs
- Security and compliance obligations
- Backup and disaster recovery capabilities
- Plans for cloud or hybrid infrastructure
Some businesses may be able to run Windows Server 2022 during extended support. Others may find the deadline coincides with an overdue hardware refresh.
The key is to make that decision intentionally.

- Identifying every server running Windows Server 2022 or an older OS.
- Recording the age, warranty status and manufacturer support status of the hardware.
- Verifying firmware, drivers and management tools are supported.
- Reviewing storage capacity, performance and reliability.
- Verifying backups are completing successfully.
- Testing critical systems can be restored from those backups.
- Documenting applications and services on each server.
- Checking compatibility with Windows Server 2025.
- Developing a realistic upgrade or replacement budget.
